THE SPACES BETWEEN

March 2018 - TBD
Main Street Façade Sculpture Garden
Emily McMahon, Bethany Ryan, & Krista Taylor
A Note From The Artists:

THE SPACES BETWEEN
is a public sculpture that responds to nature via elements of knitting, knotting, and weaving. The sculpture embodies the connection, innovation, and commitment of individuals joining together to encourage and inspire community engagement in a receptive environment. This installation is suspended in the air, attached to an outdoor structure in front of the Pensacola Museum of Art in Downtown Pensacola. UWF’s Motto, “Sea Change,” inspires the color choices by reflecting colors of the sea through predominantly blue and green tones.

THE SPACES BETWEEN is constructed from fade-proof and water-resistant paracord, implementing traditional craft methods such as knitting, knotting, macramé, and weaving to create an open, net-like structure. The material’s strength and the knots’ stability enhances these by juxtaposing the delicacy and craft of textiles with the fluidity of nature. Weaving and knotting reflect how the colleges of the University of West Florida work together to create a campus that nurtures its students, preparing them for the professional world.

We hope that the Pensacola community recognizes these traditionally feminine practices as more than just craft, and that our sculpture inspires those whose might otherwise think their potential is limited by their gender or societal roles.
