Special Needs Educator Position

SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATOR | PART TIME 

The Pensacola Museum of Art is seeking a Special Needs Educator to join our education team to teach Art Academy for Autism throughout our Spring and Fall semesters, as well as a summer camp session. 

POSITION
Our special needs educator is a part time employee of the education department. This position serves as the main educator for our Art Academy for Autism program, as well as Creative Camp for Autism and other special needs programming throughout the year. This position reports directly to the Curator of Education. PMA requires an experienced special needs educator with a background in instructing children and adults on the Autism spectrum. Art Academy for Autism covers three age groups, including 5-9 y/o, 10-15 y/o, and adults over the age of 16. These classes are held on Friday evenings for adults and Saturdays for youth. There are 8 weekends per semester with 1-2 class sessions throughout the day. The 3 class sessions total 4.5 hrs and have a total compensation of $100. We also offer a week long summer camp for students on the spectrum during the month of August, including 3 sessions per day for the week, offering a total compensation of $650.

EDUCATOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works closely with the Curator of Education to develop lesson plans and class curriculum for Art Academy for Autism. 
  • Works with a volunteer/teaching assistant during class to teach those lessons
  • Provides positive behavioral support to students
  • Makes recommendations to Curator of Education and parents based on perceived student needs in the classroom.
  • Works as a consultant within other special needs programs for the PMA

 SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

We are looking for a confident, caring, patient, and creative educator with strong experience in special needs education and Autism education. 

 REQUIRED


  • Creative lesson planning skills for art education;
  • Hands-on experience in a diverse set of creative methods or technical skills;
  • Strong problem solving skills;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Background in special needs education and arts education or studio art;
  • Confidence working with students of all ages;
  • Strong public speaking skills;
  • Ability to speak to and command attention of large groups of students;
  • Strong positive behavioral support skills;
  • Team player and collaborative thinker;

 BENEFICIAL 
  • Experience teaching in classrooms or non-traditional learning environments;
  • Florida Certificate of Autism Endorsement;
  • Florida Teaching Certificate;
  • Connections or background working with the Autism Community in Pensacola. Our students will more easily transition into learning under a new teacher if many of them already recognize their instructor.
