Old South, New South; A Retrospective
November 18 - December 31, 2016

After winning the 2015 Member's Juried Exhibition, the Pensacola Museum of Art is proud to announce the solo exhibition of 14 original works from Svend Damhave. Svend has been painting for over 60 years, and continues to pursue it even while balancing a medical career. He received his BA from Auburn University and his work has been shown in galleries from Washington D.C. to Jupiter, FL. While Svend considers himself self-taught his work has been described as photo-realistic. His use of acrylic and transparent glazes create an emphasis on contrast and depth from the use of shadows. This exhibit will focus on scenes from southern cities in a light that can only be described as warm and appealing.

In Focus: Architectural Photography by Joseph Constantino
October 14-December 31, 2016

A Manhattan native, Joseph Constantino was raised only steps away from some of the world's most beautiful buildings. Although traveling is what ignited his passion for architectural details, he ultimately came back to the states and captured the buildings surrounding him in both New York and Florida. Infrared, street, and solarization are the prime area of interest for Constantino. He has been addicted to black and white photography since the 70s when he built a darkroom in his home.

The Pensacola Museum of Art is pleased to exhibit the architectural photographs captured in focus by Joseph Constantino. The exhibit will showcase 30 of the artist's pieces; 20 monochrome solarized and 10 color solarized images.

Stephen Knapp: Lightpaintings
April 22 – August 27, 2016

Opening Reception: Friday, April 22, 5:30 - 7:30pm

Stephen Knapp dispenses with traditional media to create sculptural canvases composed entirely of light and glass. Heralded as the first new art medium of the 21st century the artist has been developing his “lightpaintings" since the late 1990s. These works explore color, light and space through the use of specially cut dichroic glass, shaped and polished to create a palette that refracts light onto the walls and surrounding space into abstract compositions. The fabricated glass and steel works are the crossroads of painting, sculpture and technology. “The walkaround quality is key,” explains Knapp, “There has to be depth and movement. I want it to be sculptural. There’s this incredible sense of illusion, of going back into the wall. Its almost like a portal opening to another dimension.”

Knapp has gained an international reputation for large-scale works of art held in museums, public, corporate and private collections. He has had solo museum exhibitions at the Boise Art Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Naples Art Museum, the Bultler Institute of Art, the Dayton Art Institute, and the Polk Museum of Art, among others. The Pensacola Museum of Art will present 14 of the artist’s lightpaintings during the summer of 2016.

The Artist Revealed:  Artist Portraits and Self-Portraits
April 22 – July 16, 2016

Opening Reception: Friday, April 22, 5:30 - 7:30pm

An artist’s portrait, like all good portraits, offers the viewer more than physical features. One sees the characteristics of the sitter that make that person a unique individual. All artists are involved with, or have a heightened interest in, creative pursuits which makes them interesting candidates for portrait subjects.

On the other hand, a self-portrait is an artist’s opportunity to make a statement. Traditional portraiture, especially commissioned ones, often came with expectations that the image be a favorable likeness of the sitter. Self-portraiture removed those restrictions enabling artists to be more experimental. This exhibition brings together fifty works in a variety of media that examine self-portraits and portraits of other artists. Included in the show are works by Edouard Manet, Chuck Close, Leonard Baskin, Edward Steichen, Norman Rockwell, and Anders Zorn. Sitters include James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Eakins, Charlie Chaplin, C.S. Lewis, and Pablo Casals.

February 21 - April 5, 2014

Artist Statement: Informed by my adolescent preoccupations with climbing and skateboarding, I create work which responds to and challenges the unique characteristics of a project site.  Much like finding ones anchor or imagining a trick on a handrail, I consider and utilize the conditions surrounding a location to produce spatial relationships which weren’t previously recognized.  My use and treatment of standardized materials allows for some of the focus to remain on the viewer's present relationship to the space and the objects therein; yet their arrangement is often influenced by forces outside of my control, such as architectural limitation and institutional regulations.  Questioning the extent to which formal considerations are dictated by the conditions surrounding a space and imagining the possibilities for sculptural intervention in lieu of these conditions form my general methodology.  Ultimately, my current body of work aims to confront both viewer and location; creating an occasion for considered experience.

Nearly 90 portrait miniatures will be on display as wonderful examples of this delicate and intricately painted form of art. A selection of small-to-medium-sized sculptures placed purposefully throughout the galleries invite the viewer to access the pieces from every angle to fully appreciate the artist’s attention to detail.

Looking Back, Moving Forward: PMA Permanent Collection Retrospective
January 14 – February 15, 2014

The Permanent Collection is the heart of the Pensacola Museum of Art.  The collection represents decades of acquisitions through gifts, donations, and purchases that serve to strengthen the stature of the Museum and broaden the community’s access to prominent works of art.  In celebration of the PMA’s 60th anniversary this exhibit serves as a visual storyline of the Permanent Collection’s history.  Select works will be displayed in chronological order by the year in which they were acquired from the Museum’s original origin as the Pensacola Art Center in 1954 to the PMA today.  Unexpected juxtapositions of both seldom revealed and memorable Museum acquisitions will be on view from a variety of mediums including paintings, etching, sculpture, photography, glass, and more.  This retrospective visually illustrates the PMA’s ongoing commitment to enriching the Permanent Collection.

As stewards of the Museum’s collection the PMA assumes responsibility for works consisting primarily of 20th and 21st  century works of art by international, national, and regionally acclaimed artists.  A wide range of modern and contemporary styles and periods including Cubism, Realism, Pop Art, Non-objective Art, Folk Art, and Illustration are all featured within the collection.  The Museum also owns a fine selection of European and American decorative glass, African art and sculptural works.

The American Indian: Original Art and Artifacts and Interpretations Through Western Eyes (from the Mike and Millie Green Collection; the Peyroux, Gillmore, and Meacham Collection; and the Bob and Nancy Van Slyke Collection)
October 18 - December 30, 2013

This varied collection of objects represent the passions of seven local collectors and celebrates the beauty and history of America’s Indian tribes by showing tools and objects used in daily life and in rituals, as well as contemporary works by artists with American Indian lineage.

The exhibition also features Western-European American’s visual interpretations at the time of their exploration of North America, with lithographs by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall, and Currier and Ives.  The many layers of artistry and history seen through the lens of these local collections tell a unique visual story.
